From January 2005 to December 2009, a total of 171 severe TBI patients were enrolled in this study, among which 98 cases were boys and 73 cases were girls. The incidence was 1/1228. The average age was 10.3 years old. The injury causes were traffic accident (61 cases), fall (57 cases), and accidental injury (13 cases). The patients received imaging examination, including plain radiography, cranial computed tomography (CT), and/or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) were used to observe the brain injury and the associated pathological lesions in the cerebral white matter. Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, Injury Severity Score (ISS), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation (APACHE) II score, and mortality rate were calculated. The prognostic value of different imaging examinations and clinical findings was analyzed. A total of 127 patients had abnormal findings on cranial CT, including hematoma (57 cases), hydrocephalus (21 cases), cerebral contusion (29 cases), brain edema (34 cases), cerebral herniation (24 cases), and skull fracture (11 cases).
